Providence, RI – Downtown Attractions You Won’t Want to Miss

So many people tell me that they drive right through Rhode Island when they’ve traveled to New England. Big mistake. Providence, RI is a city worth visiting. Great Italian food, seafood, museums, shopping, historical buildings, ghosts….how can you resist? Can you tell that I have a passion for this city? I’m a native who now lives in Southern California. I make several trips “back home” each year and bring you the latest “must see” Providence destinations.

The Herreshoff Marine Museum, One of the Great New England Museums

The Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island, is hallowed ground for sailors worldwide as one of New England’s greatest museums.

It comprises a number of Herreshoff boats, historical and family exhibits, and the pinnacle of sailing races, the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.

To some people, freedom comes in the form of an automobile or airplane, but to sailors, sitting at the helm of a sailboat, be it a sailing dinghy or 12-meter, the freedom involved trumps that provided by cars and any other form of transportation going away.

Finding the Best Downtowns in New England

Bringing up the rear, but still finishing as one of our favorite downtowns is Bristol, R.I. Known as the “most patriotic town in America,” Bristol has American flags displayed throughout town, a red, white and blue painted median strip in its downtown and the oldest Fourth of July celebration in America (it’s truly a spirited celebration!). Bristol seems like the proverbial “all-American” town where everyone seems to know each other, and stores that serve residents and tourists, alike (books, toys, photo supplies, coffee shops, and other delightful local small town storefronts).
