Bill guaranteeing funeral rights for domestic partners headed to governor

STATE HOUSE – With passage by the General Assembly today, legislation to provide domestic partners with the right to make funeral arrangements for their partners will soon be on its way to the governor’s desk.

The legislation (2009-S 0195B, 2009-H5294) amends the chapter of law detailing the people who can legally make arrangements for a deceased person’s funeral, cremation or burial to include domestic partners if the deceased person left no pre-arranged funeral contract. Currently, the person with first precedent in the list of people allowed to make funeral arrangements is the surviving spouse of the deceased.
